Weekly News - 3 February 2012

Wallace High pupils Lisa Brennan and Holly Cousins recently took part in the Rotary young chef competition. They took 1st and 2nd place respectively.

A group of 20 runners from Wallace High School (senior pupils and staff) will be part of the Olympic celebrations this summer. On the evening of Wednesday 29th August they will be donning specially designed "light suits" to help light up Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh. They will be following a series of choreographed movements over a path network on the hill behind Salisbury Crag. This will create an extraordinary visual display for the walking audience (hopefully also including supporters from WHS). We were lucky enough to have a visit by two representatives from NVA, the organisation behind the event, before Christmas. After a short presentation we were shown a light suit and the various effects that can be created. This visit helped generate a lot of enthusiasm amongst the pupils who attended. We hope to start our training sessions in the summer term to ensure we are well prepared for the actual event. Wallace High School was delighted to welcome Metaphrog on Friday 3rd February. Their visit to Wallace has been funded by a grant the LRC has received from the Scottish Live Literature Fund which is organised by Scottish Book Trust, and it is a remarkable opportunity for pupils at Wallace High that Mrs Waters, Learning Resources Centre Co-ordinator, has been able to secure their time.

The organisation, run by John Chalmers and Sandra Marrs, has been creating graphic novels, comics and illustrations since 1996. They have worked on a range of graphic novels and most recently have also produced a novel called "Skint!" which was commissioned by the Scottish Book Trust in partnership with the Scottish Government. Their work has been displayed widely and most noticeably at an exhibition of Scottish comics at the Scottish House in Brussels.

John and Sandra presented to around sixty pupils, most from S2 and offered tips on drawing techniques and the creation of a character. Following which they encouraged pupils to consider analysis of comic books and graphic novels, including page layout, looking at placement of grids, or panels, and choice of colour. Before finishing the duo created a step by step guide of how they approach the book making process and ended with one of their own short animations.

Wallace High School once again welcomed a group of Primary pupils to the Science department for another heat of the K’Nex Challenge. The remaining Primary 6 pupils, including those from the Gaelic class, arrived from Riverside Primary on Friday 3rd February. Their vehicles were, once again, very innovative and the winning team managed to keep their score below zero at 0.2, the lowest yet. The winners this week were Liam, Harry, George and Jack who will be competing in the final in April.
