Overview
The aim of the art and design is to develop the pupils' appreciation and expression of their skills in art through practical work in the main areas of drawing, painting, design and crafts:
- In drawing by direct observation of form and structure, a study of line, tone, texture and composition. Various media being used.
- In painting by a knowledge of materials and the development of tone colour and techniques.
- In design by an introduction to observation, analysis and a design process.
- In crafts by a more specialist study of skills in pottery, sculpture, weaving, printing, embroidery, etc.
- In Third and Fourth Years pupils study Art and Design, following a Standard Grade course of two design units and two expressive units. An expressive art exam and two critical studies are marked externally.
In Fifth and Sixth Year a one year course of expressive art, design and related critical studies leads to an SQA Higher level award.
Higher Art/Intermediate 1 and 2 will also be available as well as a module in Computer Aided Design.
In Sixth Year pupils who have obtained a satisfactory Higher award may progress to an Advanced Higher course.
Pupils considering a career in art are helped with the preparation of portfolios for application to University or Art College.
