Overview
Gaelic continues to flourish at Wallace High School. Currently there are 15 pupils studying Gaelic ranging from S1 to S6. We continue to build on our strong links with Riverside Primary School. Our specialist Gaelic Teacher, Miss MacLean visits every Wednesday afternoon to work with P6/7 pupils in a transitional role. Our new S1 have benefited greatly from the positive relationships we established last year. Their enthusiasm for continuing to study Gaelic is exciting. They are brimming with confidence and a willingness to learn. This group are also working in collaboration with our S2 pupils and this is developing their experience of the language in all areas of the curriculum.
As a department we continue to build on our success at Standard Grade. Pupils undertake a variety of challenging tasks which develop their skills in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. This ensures that they are thoroughly prepared for the demands of the folio and the exam. We are also proud to offer a range of courses in the Upper School. Previously pupils have been successful at Higher Gaelic (Learners) and Intermediate 2 Gaidhlig. This year pupils have the opportunity to sit Higher Gaidhlig and Advanced Higher Gaelic (Learners).
We continue to raise the profile of Gaelic, both across the school and in the community by participating in a number of extra-curricular activities. Our Gaelic pupils have contributed to our newsletter 'Flourish' and junior pupils have established links with Oban High School! This resulted in a visit by the pupils of this school and a successful and enjoyable joint tour of Stirling Castle. The group were lucky enough to be accompanied by Dougie Beck of Feisean nan Gaidheal who narrated the tour in Gaelic.
We have also experienced recent success in the National Mod. Owen Sutcliffe (S5) was awarded second prize in the 16-18 year old category for his short story 'A peantadh an Dorchdais'. Congratulations to Owen.
A team of senior pupils will also be attending the BT ALBA Gaelic Debate in Stornoway from Tuesday 2nd until Wednesday 3rd November. Good luck to them and watch this space for news of their success.
Gaelic language and culture continues to be thriving and vibrant in Wallace High School.

Gaelic medium enterprise project with Historic Scotland

Recently, eight S1s and two S2 Gaelic pupils took part in a Gaelic Medium Enterprise Project held at Stirling Castle. The project aims to allow Wallace High’s Gaelic pupils to design and produce interactive information leaflets focusing on James V Palace. The leaflets are to be used by primary 5-7 Gaelic pupils when they visit the sight. Whilst attending the project, the pupils worked along side Kirsten Wood, the learning development officer from Historic Scotland, artist James Halsall and Gaelic development officer Ann Paterson, also from Historic Scotland. The day included taking pictures and gathering information for the leaflet and asking Stirling Castle staff questions and taking lots of sketches. The pupils were given the opportunity to take part in Iona Leishmans’, the artist in residence at Stirling Castle, “Give It a Go” sessions, which involved creating drawings and paintings of the castle. The project will finish with an exhibition of the pupils work at the castle in early 2012.
