S1 / 2

All pupils study topics from the 5- 14 curriculum from levels A through to F.
In S1 pupils build on work done in primary school and work towards their next level. When pupils are ready to sit the next level (usually at the end of S1 or early in S2) they will sit a national test and then move onto the next level. They will work towards this for the remainder of S2. Some pupils will pass a level in one year, for others it will take 2 years to achieve the next level. (E.g. Some pupils will spend S1 and S2 working towards level E)

S3 / 4

In S3 and S4 the majority of pupils follow Standard Grade courses, with some following Intermediate 1 and 2 courses.

Pupils that have passed level F in S2 follow the credit course for the 2 years of S3 and S4
Pupils that have passed level E in S2 will follow Intermediate 1 for S3. At the end of S3 these pupils will sit the Intermediate 1 exam. Those who pass this will follow intermediate 2 in fourth year and sit this at the end of S4. Pupils who fail Intermediate 1 will follow the general course in S4 and sit this at the end of S4.

Pupils passing level D in S2 will follow General maths for S3 and S4.

Pupils passing levels A, B, C follow Access 3 in S3 and most should pass this at the end of S3. These pupils then follow the Foundation course for S4.

S5 / 6

Pupils who have passed Credit or Intermediate 2 will follow the Higher Course.

Pupils who have passed General or Intermediate 1 will follow Intermediate 2.
Pupils who have passed Foundation maths will follow Intermediate 1.

(The above is a basic outline for the pathway pupils can expect to follow. It is not rigid and will always be flexible to take into consideration the fact that pupil’s abilities mature and develop at different rates and stages)
