Modern Languages

Overview

The department offers French at all levels S1 to Higher.

The first two years give pupils a good grounding in listening, reading and writing the foreign language and in speaking. Pupils are encouraged to communicate as much as possible in the foreign language and by the end of Second Year they should be able to converse about themselves, their hobbies, food and drink, their home town, homes and families.

Two further points:
(1) the study of a foreign language helps us to a better understanding of our own mother tongue and
(2) a knowledge of the foreign country, its people and its customs is an integral part of language teaching.

Conscientious learning at home is an essential part of the course. Homework includes regular learning of vocabulary and grammar.

Third and Fourth Year pupils can choose to continue with French or to begin Spanish. Both languages are studied at either Intermediate I or Intermediate 2.

S5/6: Those wishing to continue with a language after S4 prepare for Higher Grade over one or two years. More written French is now required, but the oral side is not neglected. By now pupils are capable of studying longer texts.

Intermediate 1 and Intermediate 2 courses in French are also offered in S5/6.

Within the department, Spanish and Italian are also available to senior pupils at Intermediate 1, 2 and Higher levels, while the Advanced Higher course in all languages allows pupils to develop a cultural understanding of the country of study.
