Physical Education

Overview

In this growing subject, pupils take part in a variety of activities reflected by the facilities available, staff expertise and needs of the pupils. The experiences gained by pupils in PE develop them physically, socially and emotionally.

In first and second year pupils have 2 periods a week and participate in the following activities: football, rugby, badminton, basketball, volleyball, fitness, swimming, athletics and Scottish and creative dance.

In third year pupils can opt to take Standard Grade which runs over two years and the pupils are assessed on their practical performance (50%), Knowledge and Understanding (25%) and their Evaluation Skills (25%). Core PE continues 2 periods a week during S3 and S4 for all pupils and the emphasis is on participation and enjoyment.

In S5/6 there are 4 courses:
Int2: 50% of the overall mark is assessed on practical performance in volleyball, swimming and badminton, or swimming, badminton and football, with the best two marks out of three activities counting. Analysis and Development of Performance Unit constitutes the remaining 50%.
Higher: 40% of the overall mark is assessed on performance in volleyball, swimming and badminton or swimming, badminton and football and 60% is assessed in the Analysis of Performance exam;
CSLA (Community Sports Leader Award): aimed at 6th years and has been popular. It develops the seniors’ skills and qualities as leaders;
Interhouse Activities: pupils have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities and gain points for their house;
Extra Curricular Activities: there is an extensive programme of clubs and activities available to all pupils which are co-ordinated by the School Sports Co-ordinator. These run over lunch and after school. Wallace High has won the Stirling Council Secondary Sports School of the Year in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
