Broad General Education (BGE) - S1 to S3
During these years learners continue to work through the Experiences and outcomes of the Broad General Education, building and developing skills and knowledge gained in Primary school years. Ensuring the correct level is important in Mathematics and classes are set into ability groupings with pupils continuing to work through levels 1 to 4 of the Scottish Curriculum. The Experiences and Outcomes are structured with three main organisers, each of which can be divided into topics which are studied at each level:
- Number, Money, Measure
- Shape, Position, Movement
- Information Handling
- Numeracy Skills
In years S4 -6 pupils will develop the knowledge and skills required to be successful in achieving National Qualifications at the end of each school year.
Mathematics courses at National 4 & 5 levels will develop the skills required to progress to the Higher Maths course.
The Life Skills Mathematics Course at National 4 level will develop the skills that are immediately useful for life and work.
In Addition to the above courses, the Personal Finance Award is available in S5 & 6. (and to some S4 pupils) This course develops the skills and knowledge for independent living. Eg budgeting and investigating the different financial products available for managing and borrowing money.
Homework / Revision / Self Study for the Senior Phase.
It must be emphasised that Hard Work (not natural Ability) is the key to achieving in maths. Any pupil following the Higher level course is expected to dedicate at least 2 hours per week (starting in August) to homework tasks / independent revision.
